Cybercrime Rises 17% in India Amid 6% Drop in Overall Crime Rate: NCRB Report

India's overall crime rate fell by 6% in 2024 compared to the previous year, but cybercrime surged by over 17%, according to the NCRB's 'Crime in India 2024' report released on May 6, 2026. The report also recorded rising suicides among farmers, daily wage workers, and a 50% increase in drug overdose deaths.
India's overall crime rate declined by 6% in 2024, with 58.86 lakh cognisable cases registered, down from the previous year, while cybercrime cases rose by 17.3%, reaching 1,01,928, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report released on May 6, 2026. The report attributed 72.6% of cybercrime cases to fraud, followed by sexual exploitation and extortion.
