The exchange’s recent capital infusion of ₹770 crore—secured in October 2025—signals a determined pivot from its core agricultural commodity trading. That haul will underwrite the rollout of a cash market slated for late FY27 or early 2027, pending regulatory green lights.
Vikas Goel, MD & CEO, said the move is about carving a niche rather than head‑to‑head duels with giants like BSE or NSE. By launching ETFs and mutual‑fund products tied to its own indices, NCDEX hopes to tap retail investors in tier‑2 cities who remain underserved.
NCDEX already runs two rule‑based equity indices, NDEX and FINNDEX, that diverge from the standard free‑float weightings. Its four‑factor design—market cap, liquidity, beta, volatility—aims to give traders a fresh lens for market exposure.
Technology will sit at the core of this expansion. Goel said ₹770 crore will fuel upgrades to a high‑frequency trading‑ready infrastructure, aiming to match the capabilities of BSE and MCX. The exchange is also training farmer‑producer organisations to act as mutual‑fund distributors.
NSE holds a minority stake in NCDEX but remains hands‑off. The exchange’s board has engaged NSE Indices to manage its equity indices, with potential further collaborations on commercial terms. Analysts anticipate that the new equity segment could lift trading volumes, but actual market uptake will hinge on regulatory approvals and liquidity buildup.
