The Indian Biogas Association (IBA) has proposed a 10% mandatory blending of fermented organic manure with chemical fertilizers by 2030, which could save India $2 billion in imports annually. The IBA presented a white paper outlining a comprehensive policy framework to integrate fermented organic manure into existing government schemes.
The white paper, released by New and Renewable Energy Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi, emphasizes the need to restore India's declining soil health through the blending of organic manure with fertilizers.
According to the IBA, India's soil organic carbon levels are critically low at approximately 0.4%, impacting soil fertility, water retention, and crop productivity.
The association has proposed the launch of a national programme to ensure 100% offtake and utilization of fermented organic manure, creating a circular ecosystem linking renewable energy with agriculture. The IBA president, A.R. Shukla, stated that a structured blending mandate can transform India's agricultural landscape while reducing reliance on chemical fertilizer imports.
The court or relevant authorities are yet to respond to the proposal, but the IBA has emphasized the need for immediate and coordinated policy action to mainstream fermented organic manure and unlock its full potential as a cornerstone of regenerative agriculture in India. The government is expected to review the proposal and announce its decision in the coming weeks.
