The body of a 22‑year‑old student was found on Saturday in the shared accommodation of a Guwahati homestay. Authorities said the cause of death is still under investigation, with no signs of foul play at the scene.
Asik Ali, who had dated the student for several years, was arrested after the body was discovered. He told investigators that the girl had hanged herself, a version police say they are looking into.
Ali’s mother told NDTV that the couple had visited their home during Eid and that the family had previously expressed reservations about their interfaith relationship. She warned, "If my son is guilty, he should be punished." Ali’s father added that he had taken the student to a hospital with security staff following the incident.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the investigation will scrutinise digital footprints, including Facebook and phone records, and will involve the parents of both parties. He promised that those responsible would be punished. Police have also detained the homestay caretaker, owner, and other staff for questioning.
The victim’s classmates recall her as a bright student who dreamed of becoming a civil engineer. A staff member at the homestay said they had seen a heated argument earlier that day.
The police are expected to conclude the probe by the end of May, after which a formal report will be filed.
