Google Shares Hold Steady After Gemini 'Argon' AI Model Launch

Google’s shares were unchanged after the company unveiled its latest Gemini "Argon" model at a press briefing on Wednesday. The model, dubbed "Argon," is larger than previous "Pro" tier releases, according to a Google spokesperson, and is positioned to compete with frontier models such as Anthropic’s Astra and OpenAI’s Opus.

Google will provide Argon to a limited set of cybersecurity partners and is participating in the U.S. government’s voluntary pre‑release access program, but has not set a public launch date. In a shift from earlier plans, the company has abandoned the scheduled release of Gemini 3.5 Pro, a move that was originally slated for June.

The announcement follows a broader restructuring of the DeepMind AI lab, with CEO Demis Hassabis stepping aside and several senior leaders departing. While Google has downplayed any lag in the AI race, it is now emphasizing cost advantages over rivals, a stance that analysts say could influence short‑term profitability.

Looking ahead, investors will be watching for any guidance on revenue impact from new AI partnerships and the eventual commercial rollout of Argon.
