Neeraj Yadav, the 42‑year‑old para‑athlete, was found dead in his Delhi flat on Tuesday night. Police suspect suicide after he allegedly consumed poison.
Yadav’s career is a testament to resilience. He first shone in 2015 at the Delhi State Athletics Meet, taking gold in shot put, javelin and discus. In Jakarta he claimed gold in the F55 javelin with an Asian record of 29.84 m. He added two more golds in Hangzhou 2023, in discus and javelin, bringing his tally to three.
But 2023 saw a setback when a Bengaluru sample tested positive for stanozolol, leading to a provisional suspension. The case halted his participation in the Aichi‑Nagoya Asian Para Games and cast a shadow over his legacy.
The news has stunned teammates, coaches and fans alike. Former coach Pawan Kumar called Yadav’s passing a "wake‑up call" for the sport, urging reforms in mental‑health support and anti‑doping oversight.
The Paralympic committee will now review athlete welfare protocols and consider changes to ensure no other champion faces a similar fate.
