HDFC Bank shares slid 27% YTD on Thursday’s announcement of Anup Bagchi as the new MD & CEO, according to sources with knowledge of the matter told CNBC‑TV18 exclusively.
Bagchi, a non‑HDFC Group executive, was confirmed for a three‑year term last Thursday, a move described by insiders as "swift, decisive and courageous" and credited to Chairman Rajiv Kumar for preventing a leadership vacuum after Sashidhar Jagdishan’s decision not to seek re‑appointment.
The bank’s strategy under Bagchi will focus on rebuilding brand and trust, optimizing the balance sheet, and preparing for future readiness, with a heavier emphasis on technology, digitization and customer service, sources added.
Rajiv Kumar said the appointment was part of a broader plan to groom future leaders, noting the bench strength would ensure operational continuity even if potential exits follow the change.
Market analysts point to the 27% decline as a reflection of slower growth, record‑low margins, succession uncertainty and persistent selling by foreign institutional investors, marking the worst calendar‑year performance for HDFC Bank since 2008. The stock remains under pressure as investors weigh the bank’s strategic roadmap against a backdrop of sector‑wide margin pressure.
