Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, at 10 a.m. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, following his party's successful bid to form a government with support from allied parties. The swearing-in ends days of uncertainty after TVK won 108 of 234 assembly seats, falling short of a majority but securing backing from the VCK, IUML, Congress, CPI, and CPI(M).
The Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, accepted Vijay's claim to form the government after he presented letters of support from the coalition partners, totaling 120 legislators. The alliance will not include VCK and IUML as formal coalition partners, as both have opted to provide outside support.
Over 5,000 guests attended the ceremony, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The event was broadcast live by Times Now and other networks due to its historic significance—the first non-DMK, non-AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu in nearly 70 years.
Vijay is required to prove his majority on the floor of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on or before May 13, as directed by the Governor. The next session of the assembly will convene to conduct the trust vote.
