Domkhonei Touthang, a mother of five, was shot dead in Kamjong district’s Chassad village on Friday night at 9:40 p.m., the bullet striking near her neck. Within hours, gunfire erupted across the village, and several houses were set ablaze, leaving a trail of smoke and shattered windows.
The violence, which escalated overnight, kept local residents on edge; witnesses reported continuous gunfire and the sight of burning homes even as the sun rose.
In response, the District Magistrate imposed a 400‑metre prohibitory order under Section 162 of the BNSS, banning gatherings of five or more people. The order also exempted security personnel, magistrates on duty, essential‑service workers and those holding special permits. The DM directed the Superintendent of Police to deploy adequate security within the restricted zone.
The Kuki‑Zo Women’s Forum in Delhi and NCR condemned the killing, demanding a time‑bound, impartial investigation and humanitarian, psychological and financial support for Touthang’s five children.
Authorities will keep the prohibitory order in force until further notice, while police maintain a heightened presence to prevent further clashes. The next step will be a formal inquiry into the shooting and a review of security protocols in the conflict‑torn region.
