Kerala Congress MLA Apu John Joseph on Sunday clarified his 'prodigal son' remark directed at Kerala Congress (M) leader Jose K. Mani, saying it was drawn from biblical context and not meant as a personal insult. He expressed regret if the comment caused discomfort, emphasizing that his intent was misinterpreted by the KC(M).
Joseph, son of Kerala Congress chairperson P.J. Joseph, had invited KC(M) to return to the mainstream after the Assembly election results, describing the gesture as sincere and politically motivated. He said the remark was meant to reflect a desire for the party's survival, calling its decline unhealthy for Kerala's political landscape.
The KC(M), however, rejected the comment as disrespectful, viewing it as an attempt to belittle their faction. Joseph maintained that the invitation was extended in a spirit of unity and not condescension.
Political observers note the sensitivity of intra-church-based party dynamics in central Kerala, where both factions trace their lineage to the original Kerala Congress. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
