The Supreme Court on Friday issued contempt notices to Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and journalist Nikhil Wagle after they made remarks perceived as insulting to Chief Justice Surya Kant. The action followed a petition filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association seeking criminal contempt proceedings against the two.
The bench, chaired by the CJI, delivered a show‑cause notice demanding that Raut and Wagle explain why contempt action should not be initiated. In his remarks, the CJI highlighted that the judiciary has consistently protected Raut’s rights in past interactions and urged restraint.
SCBA president P. K. Gopal urged the bench to order the two to appear personally before the court, but the CJI exempted them from personal appearance for the time being, stating the matter would be listed on a short date.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta cautioned that some individuals deliberately make comments to pressure the court, noting that such attempts are often futile. He emphasized that the judiciary remains vigilant against contempt.
The court has scheduled a hearing on the contempt matter for a short date, after which it will decide whether to proceed with criminal contempt proceedings against Raut and Wagle.
