Manipur BJP Spokesperson Quits Over Handling of Ethnic Crisis

Elangbam Johnson, spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party's Manipur unit, resigned from the party on Friday, citing its failure to resolve the ethnic conflict that has gripped the state since May 2023. He accused the BJP leadership of being unable to assure peace and of centralizing decision-making, leaving the state unit ineffective in addressing local crises.
The violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities erupted on May 3, 2023, and has since resulted in more than 260 deaths and the displacement of approximately 62,000 people. Johnson, who previously belonged to the United Committee Manipur and contested the 2022 Assembly election from Keishamthong, said he took the decision after consulting with his supporters.
On May 7, attacks targeted Tangkhul Naga villages in Kamjong district near the India-Myanmar border, allegedly carried out by members of the Kuki National Army-Burma. The United Naga Council, Congress, and National People’s Party condemned the attacks and criticized security forces for inaction.
The Assam Rifles confirmed it responded to heavy firing and explosions near Z. Choro, deploying rescue teams that evacuated 15 villagers, secured 10 houses, and provided humanitarian aid at a camp in Aloyo. During search operations, troops apprehended a suspected NSCN(IM) militant with an AK-47 rifle, magazine, and ammunition, later transferring him to local police.
Assam Rifles continue patrols across Kamjong district to maintain security and prevent escalation, the Defence Ministry said, as tensions persist along the India-Myanmar border.
