At least 12 Pakistani police officers were killed in a car bombing and shootout at a police post in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, according to police officials. The attack, which was claimed by the militant alliance Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen, involved a car filled with explosives ramming into the post, followed by an ambush on police personnel who arrived to provide backup.
The police post was severely damaged in the attack, with images showing the structure reduced to rubble and debris scattered around the area. Police official Sajjad Khan said that the bodies of 12 officers had been recovered from the collapsed outpost, while three personnel were found alive and rushed to hospital.
The attack has raised concerns about the potential for renewed fighting along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, where militant attacks have been a source of tension between the two countries. Islamabad has blamed Kabul for harbouring militants who use Afghan soil to plot attacks in Pakistan, while the Taliban has denied the allegations and said that militancy in Pakistan is an internal problem.
The immediate outlook is for a continued security crackdown in the region, with a state of emergency declared in government hospitals in Bannu. The authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the attack and increase security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
