Kerala Filmmaker's AI Short Film Selected for Cannes

Sachu Mathew Kuruvila, a 29-year-old filmmaker from Kottayam, has had his AI short film 'The Light' selected for the AI Film Awards at Cannes, scheduled to take place on May 21. The film, which explores themes of loneliness and emotional connection, tells the story of an elderly man who forms a bond with a pigeon.
The achievement is notable for Kuruvila, who is self-taught and made the film using AI-generated visuals, collaborating with an illustrator. The film has no dialogue and has also been selected for the Burano Artificial Intelligence Film Festival.
Kuruvila, who works with the State Bank of India, raised ₹1 lakh from friends and family through crowdfunding to fund the project. He says his inspiration comes from real-life emotions and human experiences, and he plans to continue exploring AI as a medium.
The selection of 'The Light' for the AI Film Awards marks a significant milestone for Kuruvila, who aims to tell impactful stories regardless of the medium. The AI Film Awards will be held at Cannes on May 21, and Kuruvila's film will be showcased alongside other innovative AI films from around the world.
