The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed its first Cabinet in West Bengal following its victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and five MLAs sworn in on May 9, 2026, by Governor R.N. Ravi. The ministerial appointments reflect a deliberate balance of regional, caste, and community representation aimed at consolidating support across the state's diverse demographics.
The new ministers are Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik. Adhikari, a Brahmin, represents coastal South Bengal, while Ghosh, from Kharagpur Sadar, is a senior OBC leader and former state BJP president. Paul, a Kayastha and former fashion designer, retains her seat from Asansol Dakshin and serves as a prominent woman leader. Kirtania, from Bongaon Uttar, is a key Matua representative, a community that has strongly backed the BJP. Tudu, from Ranibandh in Bankura, represents the tribal Junglemahal region and took oath in Santali. Pramanik, the sole North Bengal representative, won from Mathabhanga after serving as Cooch Behar MP from 2019 to 2024.
The appointments ensure geographic spread, with four ministers from South Bengal, one from the tribal belt, and one from North Bengal. The selection underscores the BJP's strategy to build a broad social coalition by including Brahmin, OBC, Matua, tribal, and Rajbanshi communities. With 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, the BJP has a clear majority, while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats.
The Constitution limits the Council of Ministers to 15% of Assembly strength, allowing up to 44 ministers in West Bengal. The current cabinet of six is well below this cap, leaving room for expansion after all elected MLAs are sworn in. The BJP legislature party has finalized its executive leadership, while the Trinamool Congress has yet to name its Leader of the Opposition, with Ballygunge MLA Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as a leading contender.
The state government is expected to announce further ministerial appointments in the coming days, as the BJP moves to consolidate governance and administrative control across West Bengal.
