The Communist Party of India (CPI) has staked claim for the post of Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam confirmed. The Leader of the Opposition will be from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), but a formal announcement is awaited as to who will hold the post.
The CPI’s decision to go for the post comes amid reports that senior CPI functionaries had slammed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s leadership for the LDF debacle in the 2026 Assembly elections.
In the LDF’s tally of 35 seats in the 2026 Assembly polls, the CPI(M) has 26 seats, CPI 8, and the RJD, one.
The CPI’s own winning tally included three of its four ministers - P. Prasad, K. Rajan, and G.R. Anil. The Kerala Assembly is expected to convene soon, with the formal announcement of the Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition posts likely to be made during the session.
