Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday the conflict in Ukraine was 'coming to an end,' according to remarks to reporters. The statement comes amid reports that European Union leaders are preparing for potential negotiations to address the ongoing war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Putin identified former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as the individual he would prefer to represent European interests in any discussions. The Kremlin reiterated last week that European governments, having severed diplomatic ties with Moscow in 2022, must take the first step toward resumption of contact.
The Financial Times reported Thursday that EU leaders are discussing frameworks for possible engagement with Russia under certain conditions. No formal invitations or direct negotiations have been confirmed by European officials.
EU foreign policy representatives have not yet responded publicly to Putin's remarks. The bloc is expected to discuss the situation at an upcoming foreign ministers' meeting on Monday.
