The Congress-led United Progressive Front (UDF) has won a total of 89 seats in the 140-member Kerala state assembly, marking the end of the Left rule in the state. The UDF's victory has sparked a contest for the chief minister post, with three key Congress leaders - AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, LoP in the outgoing assembly VD Satheesan, and Chennithala - competing for the position.
The matter is now before the party's high command, which is expected to take a final decision soon. Congress observers have submitted their report to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and party leaders are likely to meet at Kharge's residence to discuss the issue.
Supporters of both Venugopal and Satheesan have come out with posters and banners of their leaders in Delhi and the state capital, indicating a strong contest for the post.
Senior Congress leader K Muraleedharan has stated that the party high command is likely to take a final decision on Kerala's next CM within 24 hours, saying that discussions on the chief ministerial candidate will be completed within the given timeframe. The court or in this case, the party's high command, will likely announce the decision soon, bringing an end to the current uncertainty.
