Tamil Nadu Governor Demands Proof of Majority as TVK Chief Vijay Claims Power
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Raj Bhavan on Thursday to reiterate his claim to form the government in Tamil Nadu. The Governor informed the actor-turned-politician that an invitation to take the oath of office is contingent on proving majority support on the floor of the House to ensure a stable administration.
The TVK currently holds 113 seats in the 234-member assembly following a formal extension of support by five Congress legislators. Despite the alliance, the coalition remains five seats short of the 118-seat majority mark required to govern. Vijay reportedly submitted a detailed report to the Governor during their second meeting in two days, asserting his readiness for an immediate floor test.
Amid the political deadlock, TVK has moved approximately 70 of its legislators to a private resort in Mamallapuram to prevent potential poaching attempts. Private security personnel have taken over the protection of the MLAs at the facility after the state police withdrew the official security convoy previously assigned to the TVK leader.
The anticipated swearing-in ceremony remains on hold as the TVK leadership continues negotiations with independent candidates and smaller parties. Raj Bhavan is expected to provide further instructions on the timeline for a floor test once the party submits additional evidence of support.
