Two passengers were killed and 11 others were injured after a double-decker bus travelling from Patna to Delhi crashed into a truck on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Uttar Pradesh on Monday. The accident took place around 4:30 a.m. near the Araul toll plaza in the Bilhaur area of Kanpur, according to police.
The bus lost control and rammed into the rear of the truck, causing the truck to overturn and the front portion of the bus to be severely damaged. Several passengers were trapped inside the wreckage, but police and rescue teams from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority were able to launch an immediate rescue operation.
The injured passengers were pulled out of the vehicles and taken to the nearest Community Health Centre for treatment, with three critically injured passengers referred to Lala Lajpat Rai hospital for advanced treatment. Two of the critically injured passengers, Neeraj and Babloo, died during treatment, said Assistant Commissioner of Police Manjay Singh.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, with police probe indicating the bus was travelling at over 100 kilometres per hour at the time of the crash. Cranes and other machines were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles from the expressway, after which traffic movement was restored.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem, and further legal action will follow after a formal complaint is received, police said. The authorities will continue to investigate the cause of the accident and take necessary actions to prevent such incidents in the future.
