The board’s move comes after a review of the domestic umpiring panel triggered by a spike in match quality demands.
Under the new scheme, umpires will be split into four grades – A, B, C and D – with grades A and B reserved for senior tournaments and the lower grades handling junior fixtures.
Current top 20 umpires earn Rs 30,000 per day in other domestic matches, while the rest earn Rs 20,000 in T20s. The new pay will bump the top tier to Rs 40,000, with outstation allowances climbing to Rs 1,500 and local officials receiving Rs 500‑1,000.
The announcement was made on the eve of the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting, and the revamped panel will be in place as the Ranji Trophy launches on Oct 11, setting the tone for the season.
