Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has termed the proposal to increase the strength of India's Lok Sabha to 850 members as a 'joke', suggesting it would turn the parliament into a 'desi' version of the Chinese People's Consultative Conference. This statement was made during the Stanford India Conference 2026 in California on Sunday.
BJP leader Tejasvi Surya countered Mr. Tharoor's argument, stating that delimitation is a 'democratic necessity' to ensure more accountability from elected representatives, citing the significant population growth since the last delimitation.
Another BJP leader, K. Annamalai, viewed the delimitation exercise as a 'grand bargain' between North and South Indian states, considering the varying total fertility rates and the impending census results.
The leaders participated in a session titled 'India, That Is Bharat: Growth, Governance, and Identity' at the conference. Mr. Tharoor emphasized that a chamber of 850 members would not allow for meaningful debate or discussion.
The immediate outlook involves continued debate on the proposal, with Mr. Tharoor suggesting that the issue of women's reservation should not be linked to delimitation and that his party would support reserving one-third of the seats for women as a standalone measure. The delimitation process may proceed with consideration of the upcoming census figures, potentially leading to a new political map of India by the 2034 election.
