James Shields, the former MLB pitcher known as "Big Game James," has put his 13,515-square-foot Rancho Santa Fe estate up for sale at $23 million.
The property, completed in 2022 after a three-year build, sits on a 2.44-acre plot in the guard-gated Roxbury Estates, 25 miles north of San Diego. Shields and his wife, photographer Ryane Nicole, purchased the land in late 2018, noting its unique shape resembled a baseball diamond.
The listing, handled by Compass agents Eric Iantorno and Pilar Meza, highlights a "California Modern Organic" design featuring 16-foot steel pocket sliders, a gourmet kitchen with Viking appliances, and a dedicated photography studio. Amenities include a golf simulator, bowling alley, and a six-car garage with parking for 30 vehicles.
Shields, who retired from the Chicago White Sox in 2018, stated the move to Idaho came sooner than anticipated but allows the couple to focus on developing their horse properties there. "We feel like we're ready to evolve into the next project," Shields told The Wall Street Journal.
The estate hits the market as a high-performance wellness retreat, boasting a primary suite with a sauna and steam room, and an automation system managing climate and security across five bedrooms. Buyers are expected to view the home in the coming weeks as Compass opens scheduled appointments.
