At a Kolkata rally marking the 100th birth anniversary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad chief Ashok Singhal, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that his BJP government would push a Uniform Civil Code and new laws against Love Jihad and Land Jihad within six months. He added, "Give us six months; we will also introduce stringent laws against Love Jihad and Land Jihad."
The announcement came as the state’s high‑level committee, chaired by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, begins its review of the UCC draft that seeks to standardise civil matters—marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption—across all communities.
Adhikari warned that the government will not tolerate attacks on Indian culture, traditions or places of worship, and pledged to keep the state free from anti‑national activities, saying, "This government will not permit any anti‑national activity here."
He also floated a ₹1,000‑crore religious tourism circuit, to be completed in two years, and blamed the previous Trinamool Congress administration for repeatedly hurting Hindu sentiments and traditions.
The state legislature will soon receive the UCC draft for debate, while the anti‑Love Jihad measures are slated for inclusion in the next policy session, according to Adhikari.
