Picture this: a silver screen that has no heart, yet it can dance to a Hindi tongue‑twister—Tilly Norwood, the world’s first AI actor, stepped onto the NDTV World Summit stage and nailed the phrase ‘Kacha papad, pakka papad’ five times in a row. The crowd, a mix of tech gurus and Bollywood insiders, erupted into laughter at her flawless delivery, proving that language learning for a chatbot isn’t just about grammar, it’s about rhythm and cultural nuance.
The creation of Tilly took two years of sweat, code, and cinematic ambition from British producer Eline van der Velden, founder of Particle6. “It’s not a simple line‑and‑click affair,” she told us, and her voice crackled with the same dry British humour that Tilly herself mimics. Van der Velden’s team fed the AI millions of lines from Bollywood classics to teach it the swagger of a Shah Rukh Khan monologue, and when the character finally said, “Mushkil sawaal hai. Par mujhe Shah Rukh Khan pasand hai,” the room went quiet—then exploded.
Not everyone was a fan. SAG‑AFTRA blasted the project as a threat to human performers, calling Tilly a “computer‑generated character” rather than an actor. Yet the debate didn’t stop there. During the discussion, Tilly—still in a British accent—offered her support for actress Kriti Sanon’s fight for personality rights, saying, “I’m completely with her. Rights over likeliness and consent are non‑negotiable.” Her words hit a nerve, turning a technical demo into a broader conversation about identity in the age of AI.
The moment that stole the show was when Tilly was asked to attempt a tongue‑twister. “Haan bilkul, bataayie kya karna hai?” she replied, and after five repetitions she quipped, “Yeh toh kaafi aasan the, kuch aur mushkil?” The audience cheered, not just for her linguistic skill but for the sheer audacity of a machine stepping into a role that Bollywood has long guarded.
What comes next? Particle6 is already lining up co‑productions with Indian studios, and Tilly’s creators hint at a debut in a short film that will feature her in a cameo alongside a human lead. Whether this synthetic star will earn a box‑office ticket or merely a cult following remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the line between human and algorithmic performance is blurring faster than a Bollywood song’s montage.
The NDTV World Summit 2026 may have been a tech convention, but for cinema lovers it’s a cliff‑hanger: will the next big hit star be a digital twin? Tune in, because the plot is still unwinding.
