Former Law Minister Urges TN Governor to Invite TVK's Vijay for Floor Test

Former Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar said the Tamil Nadu Governor must invite C. Joseph Vijay, leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to form the government and prove majority on the floor of the State Assembly. Speaking on May 7, 2026, Kumar said constitutional conventions and judicial precedents require the Governor to allow a claimant party the opportunity to demonstrate legislative support.
Kumar rejected media reports citing 'due process' as grounds for delay, calling them a pretext to stall Vijay's swearing-in despite, in his view, a clear mandate. He stated that six additional MLAs were expected to support Vijay, making his majority position undeniable.
The former minister emphasized that the Governor's constitutional role is to uphold the people's mandate, not obstruct it through procedural delays. He described any postponement as both a political outrage and a constitutional heresy.
Kumar's statement adds legal weight to growing pressure on the Governor to act swiftly. The court or Assembly leadership is expected to clarify the timeline for the floor test in the coming days.
