The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) is drafting a new set of rules for solid waste management, including standard operating procedure guidelines to streamline and monitor the process. The new guidelines will demand large commercial establishments and bulk waste generators to process their own waste instead of leaving it to the urban local body.
The new rules will define bulk generators as those who operate on 20,000 square feet or more, or generate over 100 kilograms of waste per day, including hotels, malls, banquet halls, and commercial complexes.
The BCC will encourage self-processing of waste by bulk generators and monitor the same, promoting methods such as composting, biogas generation, and conversion of wet waste into organic manure.
The new rules will also segregate waste into various categories, including wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste, and special waste, with sanitary waste including disposable materials like diapers and sanitary napkins, and medical waste, and special waste including e-waste and hazardous materials.
The BCC will resume its efforts to finalize the new rules, with the aim of implementing them in the near future, and will work with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition to the new waste management system.
