Residents Block Sludge Dumping in Ranipet Village

Residents of Edakuppam village in Ranipet, India, blocked a tractor carrying sludge on Thursday, preventing its illegal dumping in open plots on Edakuppam Main Road. The village, with over 10,000 residents, relies on groundwater and local water sources for drinking and irrigation, which are threatened by the dumping of sludge and other waste.
The residents, mostly petty traders, agricultural laborers, and low-level government staff, have been complaining about the issue for months, citing health risks and pollution of water bodies.
The civic bodies around the village have been dumping sludge, meat wastes, and other garbage on open plots near lakes, which gets washed into water bodies during rain, contaminating the water used for domestic consumption and irrigation.
The residents have decided to seize vehicles carrying sludge to dump in open areas in the future, and the local police have pacified the agitated residents, who dispersed peacefully after the incident.
The immediate outlook is that the residents will continue to monitor the situation and take action against any further attempts to dump waste in the village, while awaiting a response from the civic authorities to address the issue.
