Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (CPCL) recorded a record crude throughput of 11.71 million tonnes in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, achieving a capacity utilization of 112%. The performance marks the highest in the company's history, sustained despite planned maintenance stoppages at its Manali refinery complex in Tamil Nadu.
All three crude processing units at the Manali refinery operated efficiently throughout the year, with the oldest unit delivering its best output to date even after a turnaround. The second and third units each exceeded 30% above their previous benchmarks, while secondary units — including the hydrocracker and fluid catalytic cracker (FCC) — saw improved capacity realization due to tighter control of pressure and temperature parameters.
Distillate yield reached approximately 80% in FY26, up from 78% in 2023-24, with increased production of high-value products such as petrol, diesel, kerosene, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). CPCL attributed the gains to sustained energy efficiency measures and operational discipline.
The refinery benefited from access to a diversified crude basket of over 160 varieties, facilitated by its parent company, Indian Oil Corporation, which procures crude in bulk. This flexibility enabled CPCL to optimize output of specialty products like paraffin wax and lubricants.
Company officials stated that focus on operational excellence will continue into FY27, with ongoing investments in process optimization and maintenance scheduling to sustain high utilization levels.
