J&K Minister Sakina Itoo on Friday said the campaign to demolish properties and seal houses in the garb of an anti-drug initiative should stop in Kashmir, as it is making life difficult for locals. Itoo questioned the J&K Police's anti-drug campaign, which has carried out large-scale sealing of properties and demolition of properties, and said the police should focus on the supply chain and ensure drugs do not enter Kashmir.
The Minister expressed concern over the disproportionate number of demolitions and attachment of properties in the Kashmir valley compared to Jammu, despite the drug problem being more prevalent in Jammu.
The J&K Police have continued their crackdown on locals, attaching properties and demolishing structures, with the police spokesman saying the action forms part of the intensified campaign aimed at dismantling the support structures of drug trafficking networks.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party has criticized the government's actions, with legislator Waheed ur Rehman Parra saying bulldozer justice without procedure or due process is not governance, but a dangerous precedent. The J&K government is expected to respond to the criticism and continue its efforts to curb drug abuse, with the Omar Abdullah government having already framed an anti-drug policy and introduced a Bill in the J&K assembly.
