Six people, including five tourists from Gujarat, were killed and four others injured when the Toyota Innova they were traveling in fell into a deep gorge in Chamba district's Kakira area in the early hours of Monday, May 11, 2026, police said. The vehicle, which was carrying 10 occupants, was en route from Manali to Dalhousie on the Lahru-Tunnuhatti road when it crashed.
The deceased were identified as Lalit Bhai Phatnani, his wife Mamta, Priyank Kanhaiya Lal, his wife Kajal, their son Diyansh, and driver Jaswant from Mandi's Jogindernagar subdivision. Rescue teams faced difficulties retrieving survivors due to the severe impact, which scattered vehicle parts across the site.
The injured were taken to Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda, Kangra district, for treatment. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu directed the district administration to provide full assistance to families and ensure optimal medical care for the injured.
Officials said preliminary accounts from survivors indicate the driver lost control while navigating a sharp curve, though the exact cause remains under investigation. A case has been registered and authorities are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances leading to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are expected to file a detailed report in the coming days.
