Chennai experienced monsoon-like weather on Saturday, with widespread showers and overcast skies bringing relief to residents from soaring mercury levels and searing heat. The city and its neighboring districts are among 19 districts of the State that have a possibility of heavy rainfall with gusty winds on Saturday.
The upper air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Sri Lanka triggered the widespread rainfall, which is predicted to influence the formation of a low-pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal around May 11.
Several parts of the city received showers from Saturday morning, with the Regional Meteorological Centre forecasting light to moderate rainfall in many places of the State on Saturday. Eight districts have been issued an orange weather alert, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Saturday.
The maximum temperatures may fall by three-four degree Celsius in many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, according to the RMC. Several north Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai and its neighboring districts, may experience heavy rainfall on May 13.
The Regional Meteorological Centre will continue to monitor the weather situation, with Chennai expected to experience pleasant weather on Sunday, and the low-pressure area likely to form on May 11.
