Manipur shares a 398‑km international boundary with Myanmar, yet large stretches remain unfenced, prompting ongoing security concerns. The line cuts through Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Kamjong and Ukhrul, areas where infiltration and smuggling persist.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla met senior officials at Lok Bhavan on Tuesday, demanding the fencing project be finished swiftly. In the same meeting, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh raised cross‑border threats, urging tighter surveillance and inter‑agency coordination.
Union Home Affairs has already completed 50 km of fencing, while an additional 80 km is underway. Lakhera inspected the 50‑km section near Moreh, noting reinforced perimeter checkpoints and improved communication links between posts.
During a stop at Dakshata Dhama Hospitality Skill Centre, Lakhera greeted 25 chef trainees and urged them to pursue skill development linked to employment opportunities. A local farmer whose land borders the fence expressed relief that security is tightening, hoping the new barrier will reduce nighttime raids.
The Assam Rifles chief will brief the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on the fencing status at the joint security meeting scheduled for May 15. The meeting will also review troop readiness at Kakching Garrison and discuss a coordinated response to ongoing cross‑border smuggling.
