Kunal Ghosh's Car Attacked by BJP Mob; Eggs and Bricks Smash Windshield in Uttarpara

Kunal Ghosh’s vehicle was struck by a mob armed with lathis, rods and black posters in Uttarpara while he was on his way to Mamata Banerjee’s rally in Serampore. Eggs were hurled and bricks smashed the front and rear windshields, scattering glass shards that landed on the driver and the MLA himself.

Ghosh, who said the attackers were BJP goons, complained that no police officers were present to intervene. He added that a second group had blocked the road, forcing him to abandon the journey and return to Kolkata.

The incident comes amid Mamata Banerjee’s own accusations that her rally was being obstructed and that TMC cadres were placed under house arrest. Banerjee claimed that BJP‑affiliated forces had taken control of the route to the rally venue, a claim that the TMC has echoed.

In an emotional statement, Ghosh said he was "lucky" that his driver escaped injury, but he will approach Bhabani Bhavan, the state police headquarters, to present evidence of the assault. The police have yet to respond publicly to the complaint.

Both parties have called for an independent inquiry. The TMC has demanded a probe into the alleged police inaction, while the BJP has denied any involvement and threatened legal action against the MLA for defamation.

At the heart of the controversy is a broader pattern of political violence in West Bengal, with both sides accusing each other of orchestrating intimidation tactics. The outcome of the upcoming police investigation will likely influence the political calculus ahead of the next election cycle.
