The Centre has extended the provisions of five State legislations, including three of Punjab, to the Union Territory of Chandigarh, officials said. The extensions have been made through notifications under Section 87 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966.
The notifications, issued on May 6, comprise the extension of the Indian Stamp (Punjab Amendment) Acts, the Punjab Abadi Deh (Record of Rights) Act, the Punjab Prevention of Human Smuggling Act, the Haryana Fire and Emergency Services Act, and the Assam Tenancy Act.
These legislations aim to strengthen citizen protection, support efficient governance, and bring greater clarity and uniformity in regulation. The Punjab Abadi Deh Act provides a modern legal framework for survey and recording of ownership rights, while the Haryana Fire and Emergency Services Act introduces a contemporary, risk-based fire safety regime.
The Centre's move is expected to promote transparency, improve availability of rental housing, and reduce compliance burden. The court is not involved in this case, but the Centre will continue to monitor the implementation of these legislations. The next steps will involve the UT administration's efforts to enforce these laws and ensure a smooth transition.
