Unichem Laboratories Ltd. hit with a ₹93.66 crore GST penalty—₹87 crore in fines and ₹6.58 crore in interest—yet its shares gained 1.41% to ₹545.25 on the BSE.
The Order‑in‑Appeal, issued by the Commissioner, Thane on September 18, 2026, cites Section 74 and Section 122 of the CGST Act for the ₹87 crore fine, while the ₹6.58 crore interest stems from late tax payments under Section 13 and Rule 47.
According to the BSE filing, the penalty represents roughly 35% of the company’s Q3 net profit of ₹264 crore, a figure that has raised eyebrows among analysts who had expected a cleaner tax record.
Despite the sizeable hit, Unichem’s stock ticked up, buoyed by the close‑out of a US FDA inspection at its Kolhapur facility that ended with only procedural observations, and by the market’s perception that the penalty is a one‑off event unlikely to dent earnings.
The company will file an appeal within the statutory window and has stated that the order will not materially affect its financial, operational or other activities. Investors will be watching the upcoming Q4 filing on November 15 for any impact on guidance.
