David Rossi’s body was found beneath an open window of Monte dei Paschi di Siena’s headquarters in Siena on 3 July 2013, the first report claiming a 60‑ft fall.
A 2024 parliamentary inquiry released new testimony from two unnamed men who said ex‑chairman Giuseppe Mussari hired thugs to hang Rossi from the window in a threat that backfired when the rope slipped.
Witnesses added that Rossi had been moving millions of euros into accounts linked to the Grand Aracri clan of the ’Ndrangheta, and that he was planning to report the scheme to authorities. A note found in his desk, “I have done something stupid,” was once misread as a suicide note but now is seen as a last‑minute warning.
Mussari denies any involvement, calling the allegations “baseless” and threatening to sue the parliament for defamation. The commission, which began its investigation in 2021, will present its findings to the Chamber of Deputies next month, while Rossi’s family remains convinced the death was murder.
