Dinesh Thakkar, founder of Angel One Ltd., bought an eight‑storey, sea‑facing tower in Mumbai for Rs 711 crore on Tuesday. The 63,000‑sq‑ft property sits in an upscale neighbourhood and is the most expensive single residential unit ever sold in India.
Embassy Developments Ltd., the developer, saw its shares climb 8.3% in early trade after the announcement. The company had earmarked Rs 4,500 crore for residential projects across the city earlier this year.
The sale arrives amid a surge in India’s luxury housing market, where 37 deals above Rs 100 crore have been recorded since January 2025, totaling Rs 5,600 crore. Wealthy Indians are increasingly converting corporate profits into trophy homes, turning Mumbai into a global benchmark for high‑end real estate.
Analysts note that the purchase sets a new benchmark for single‑family residences, as comparable properties in New York and Mumbai now trade at similar prices. The high‑profile transaction is expected to spur further high‑value deals in the city.
For Thakkar, the move reflects his personal wealth and a growing appetite among investors for exclusive Mumbai properties. A family member of his, already active in real‑estate, reportedly plans to diversify into commercial towers.
