In August, India’s goods exports leapt 26% to $43.8 billion, the fastest quarterly rise since June 2022. Electronics shipments surged nearly 90% to $5.6 billion, engineering goods up 25% to $12.3 billion, and petroleum exports jumped 63% to $6.8 billion.
Imports slipped to $70.7 billion from $62 billion a year earlier, as gold shipments fell 58% to $2.3 billion while silver more than doubled to $1 billion. The trade deficit narrowed to $26.9 billion, a five‑month low.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal told reporters the growth stems from higher volumes in roughly 40% of major product categories, not just currency depreciation. Industry Minister Piyush Goyal hailed the figures as proof of India’s manufacturing competitiveness.
With goods and services exports approaching the $400 billion benchmark for the first half of the fiscal year, the ministry will use the data to shape next‑quarter export incentives and broader economic policy.
