In San Francisco’s exclusive Sea Cliff neighborhood, a $9.99 million property bought by Twitter co‑founder Jack Dorsey in 2012 has become the subject of a 14‑year construction saga.
Dorsey’s 3,734‑sq‑ft modernist home sits on 0.59 acre, overlooking the Pacific, and the first permit for a $3.7 million redevelopment was granted in June 2017, more than five years after the initial 2013 application.
The 2020 redesign, which added new windows and a courtyard, gained approval in July 2022, but the owner continues to file revisions for roof decks, seismic upgrades and underground water storage.
In November 2018, Dorsey bought the neighboring 0.62‑acre property at 840 El Camino del Mar for $21.9 million, bringing the combined purchase price to $31.9 million and expanding the portfolio to 1.21 acres.
The design blueprint calls for a retreat with stonework, reclaimed redwood siding, three vegetation‑covered roofs, a sauna, steam room, cold plunge and a gym, supported by 34 solar panels and a 145‑foot water line.
Local builders and neighbors have voiced both curiosity and frustration over the extended timeline; the latest permit filing is due to be reviewed by the city council in early 2027.
