At the Freedom 250 reception in Mumbai, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told a packed audience that India and the United States are aligned on core strategic issues, a statement that followed a brief but sharp reminder that even great powers differ on some matters.
Rubio emphasized a "free and open" Indo‑Pacific, insisting that no nation should dominate international shipping lanes. He also urged New Delhi to scale up energy trade and to buy more U.S. technology, framing the move as a way to diversify India’s supply chains.
Just hours later, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hosted Rubio for high‑level talks. Jaishankar posted a photo on X, saying the two leaders "shared views on trade, energy, technology, defence and people‑to‑people ties.".
The remarks arrive after a year‑long dip in ties, triggered by Washington’s tariffs and visa‑policy changes that rattled Indian officials. The U.S. has also tightened green‑card processing for major Indian IT firms, adding to the friction.
Targeting the next steps, both sides face an upcoming round of negotiations on energy imports and technology licensing. The U.S. State Department has scheduled a follow‑up meeting in New Delhi in early November, while the Indian Ministry of Commerce is drafting a new trade framework.
