Under the secondary tariff provisions, India and China could face 100 % duties on their imports of Russian energy, stacking on India’s existing 10 % tariff for forced‑labour violations.
India’s foreign ministry said it remains committed to energy security and will protect its trade interests, warning that the new sanctions "could have far‑reaching implications for the bilateral relationship and the international energy market."
Some Republican lawmakers urged the party to remove the tariff powers, fearing that the new duties could inflate global prices.
Trump will decide whether to enforce the 100 % tariffs, and tariff rates will be announced in the coming weeks, setting the stage for a sharp shift in Indo‑US trade dynamics.
