Anthropic, the Dario Amodei‑led AI startup, has quietly inaugurated a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, signalling a pivot toward tangible biology and drug science.
The new facility follows the company’s June announcement of Claude Science and a $400 million acquisition of Coefficient Bio, while adding Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board.
Life‑sciences chief Eric Kauderer‑Abrams said the lab is not solely for drug discovery, but a testbed for AI‑directed experiments. “We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work,” he told reporters.
But Kauderer‑Abrams added that while Claude AI will steer robotic units, human oversight remains essential for safety. “In our life‑science work, we’re always balancing these things,” he said.
The lab aims to tackle “undruggable” targets, potentially accelerating antibody development, though the diseases it will target remain undisclosed. The next phase will see Claude AI orchestrate lab workflows, with an eye toward preclinical trials in niches overlooked by traditional pharma.
