New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke directly to President Donald Trump on Thursday following a shooting incident in the Bronx where Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents fired multiple rounds at a man’s car. The vehicle contained a 5-year-old child who, according to early reports, sustained no physical injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. ET in the Marble Hill neighborhood.
"Early reports indicate agents surrounded (the man) and a 5-year-old-child in his car before firing multiple rounds," Mamdani stated. He described the event as "unconscionable and incredibly serious." The mayor, who referred to the victim as a "New Yorker," said he would demand an end to all ICE enforcement actions in the city during his call with the President. "I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorise our communities," Mamdani added.
Pedro Almarez, owner of a nearby eatery, told Reuters he heard shots while working and stepped outside to see three or four cars filled with ICE officers. He estimated the man shot was between 20 and 30 years of age. NYPD officers arrived roughly 10 minutes after the initial shots. The New York Police Department confirmed the shooting involved federal law enforcement agents but stated its own officers were not involved.
The victim was conscious and receiving medical attention at the scene, according to NYPD. Federal authorities are currently investigating the incident. ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At the crime scene, where police strung yellow tape across a city block, a woman on a nearby balcony heckled officers, shouting about them "taking our children."
The shooting follows heightened tensions over federal immigration enforcement in New York. Mamdani’s direct intervention signals a sharp escalation in the conflict between the city administration and federal agencies. The victim’s condition remains under review as federal investigators continue to examine the circumstances of the engagement.
