Teerath Singh, a 32‑year‑old resident of Cheete Kalan, was hit by seven to eight bullets while returning from a gurdwara on Monday evening, and he died en route to the nearest hospital. His friend, Ranjit Singh, was wounded and taken to the same facility.
SSP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal announced that the police had identified the attackers as Gurjit Singh, Gurjant Singh, Harkir Singh (alias Haki), a man known as Gora, and the village Nambardar. An FIR has been filed naming each suspect, and the arrests were made within hours of the incident. Chahal cited a long‑standing personal enmity as the motive behind the attack.
Opposition voices erupted in the assembly. Bikramjit Singh Majithia of the Shiromani Akali Dal slammed the Mann government, calling the incident proof of a collapsed law‑and‑order situation. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa echoed the criticism, saying the AAP leadership has failed to safeguard civilians and that a “jungle raj” has taken hold.
The shooting follows a Sunday attack in Moga’s Angadpura where two cousins were killed and three others injured after assailants fired from a black Scorpio SUV. Five men were arrested in that case, and the police are probing whether the incidents are connected. The spike in gun violence has left many in rural Punjab feeling unsafe.
Investigators will now pursue formal charges against the four arrested men, while the Mann administration faces mounting pressure to enforce stricter security measures. The government is expected to issue a statement by Friday and is likely to convene a special committee to review policing protocols in affected districts.
