Citroen’s 2CV electric hatchback will be 3.76 metres long and launch in Europe at a starting price of about €15,000 next year, making it the cheapest EV on the planet.
Citroen is weighing a production base in India to supply both the domestic market and exports to Europe, a move that could keep the price low while meeting growing demand for affordable electric cars.
Stellantis, Citroen’s parent, is already investing another Rs 4,000 crore in India over the next three years, and its Thiruvallur plant in Tamil Nadu has a localisation rate that tops 95 %.
Producing the 2CV in India would give the brand a competitive edge over the flood of cheap Chinese EVs that dominate Europe’s budget segment, while also leveraging India’s skilled labour and cost advantages.
For Indian buyers, a domestically built 2CV would mean a world‑class electric hatchback at a price that rivals the best of the low‑cost segment, and for exporters it would provide a steady supply chain to Europe.
The vehicle is slated for a 2028 launch in Europe, with Indian production expected to start a year earlier to meet export demand and potentially roll out a domestic trim in 2029.
