The Supreme Court, in a hearing in Delhi, ruled that the Election Commission cannot modify Forms 6, 7, and 8.
The decision came after a Special Issue Request was filed, prompting the Court to examine the statutory limits of the Commission's authority over election forms.
The bench emphasized that Forms 6, 7, and 8 are prescribed under the Representation of the People Act, and any alteration would contravene the Act unless a legislative amendment is passed.
The ruling is set to take effect immediately, tightening procedural guidelines for candidate nominations ahead of the 2027 general elections and prompting the Election Commission to seek clarification in its forthcoming annual report.
