Election Commission spokesperson stated on Saturday that the viral resignation letter attributed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is fake, dismissing the circulating document as a hoax.
The Commission clarified that all orders related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of the electoral rolls were issued after unanimous approval from all three election commissioners, and that changes to Form 6 were upheld by the Supreme Court.
In its statement, the Commission said that the letters sent by two commissioners to the Cabinet Secretary were unrelated to any policy matter of the commission or its IT division, and that work‑redistribution orders issued to an officer on deputation had not been implemented following the commissioners’ orders; the oversight over the IT division by the deputy election commissioner was never actually withdrawn.
The opposition has been demanding Kumar’s resignation amid reports of disagreements within the poll panel over SIR‑related decisions, and has scheduled meetings in New Delhi on September 30 to discuss a joint response; the Congress Working Committee will meet on September 29 to chart its strategy.
A fresh removal notice against CEC Kumar is being drafted by opposition parties and is expected to be submitted in both Houses of Parliament after legal vetting next week.
The Commission’s denial comes as voter confidence in the SIR process remains fragile, with many citizens watching how the dispute over the electoral roll will unfold.
