The United Nations Human Rights Office issued a statement on Saturday, warning that authorities had detained dozens of demonstrators, protest leaders, civil society members, lawyers and journalists during large‑scale demonstrations in Delhi.
Thameen Al‑Kheetan said the detentions were arbitrary and called for immediate release of all those held.
The UN added that any restrictions on peaceful protest must meet strict tests of necessity and proportionality, urging law enforcement to exercise restraint in line with India’s democratic traditions and international obligations.
The statement comes as Delhi residents gather in front of the Central Election Commission to protest against perceived electoral malpractices.
The UN also called on Indian authorities to engage in meaningful dialogue to address protesters’ concerns, and a government statement is expected by the end of the week.
