The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the Household Travel in India 2025‑26 report, underscoring that two‑wheelers carry the largest share of workers to work, followed by walking and bicycles.
State‑level analysis shows West Bengal workers spend an average 36 minutes commuting, while Delhi and Maharashtra follow at 35 and 34 minutes. By contrast, Lakshadweep workers clock in at only 11 minutes, the shortest among the 29 states and union territories surveyed.
Financially, the cost of travel varies sharply. Arunachal Pradesh workers spend Rs 2,409 monthly on commuting, Delhi Rs 2,052, Goa Rs 1,941, and Kerala, Mizoram, and Jammu & Kashmir‑Ladakh each exceed Rs 1,500. Low‑cost regions include Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, with averages of Rs 465 and Rs 492.
The report also highlights gender and age gaps. Male workers pay Rs 835 on average, females Rs 533. Among students, male students spend Rs 460, females Rs 423, the lowest among all categories.
Policy makers will use these figures to target subsidies, improve infrastructure, and tailor public transport services to regional needs.
